Notholirion

Notholirion is a genus of the lily family (Liliaceae). It consists of only five species. The genus is closely related to the lily (Lilium) and Fritillaria, of which some species have been counted before.

Description

Notholirion are perennial, herbaceous plants and reach a height 60-150 cm, in the case of Notholirion macrophyllum 18-30 cm. The onions are narrow ovate to almost cylindrical and are made up of the thickened approaches the ground leaves, they will be protected by a thin, brown skin.

The roots are numerous, forming at its upper part sch Brutzwiebelchen, they are egg-shaped and consist of several white scales having a fixed protective skin. Notholirion monokarp are, therefore, the plants die off after flowering, but leave several small aerial bulbs, which in turn are blühreif after a few years.

Pro racemose inflorescence, there are 2-24 flowers. The bell-or threefold shell, hermaphroditic flowers have six gleichgeformte bracts (Tetalen), which are colored pale to strong purple (except Notholirion campanulatum). The ovary is dreikammerig. Are formed oblong capsule fruits. In each fruit capsule number of winged, flat seeds are contained.

Dissemination

The species has, with the exception of the Central Asia-spread Notholirion koeieim their area in the Himalayas. The species of the genus, are mostly alpine, native to Myanmar, China (three species), Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sikkim, as well as Iran and Iraq.

Notholirion bulbuliferum, Notholirion macrophyllum and Notholirion campanulatum prefer cool and damp sites in the shade in humus soil, and Notholirion thomsonianum Notholirion koeiei inclined towards Mediterranean site conditions.
