The golden larch (Pseudolarix amabilis) is the only species of the genus within the family of Pseudolarix Pine Family (Pinaceae).
The golden larch is a deciduous tree, the height of up to 40 meters and trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters reach, go out horizontally from the main trunk of the branches. The bark is gray-brown. The needles of deciduous larch take gold in the fall of the eponymous yellow color before they fall and are reddish. The flattened, flexible needles are 2 to 5.5 centimeters long and 1.5 to 4 millimeters wide (wider than Larix).
The golden larch is rounded (not flattened), there are so male and female cones on a tree. It blooms in May. The terminal on short shoots in groups of 10-25 male cones are standing together and hang up until later. The individually on short shoots terminal and erect on a short stalk standing, female cones have a length of 5 cm to 7.5 cm and a diameter of 4 to 5 They are green or purple during flowering and green and reddish-brown at maturity. The 18-30 thick, woody seed scales have a 2.8m to 3.5 and a width of about 1.7 cm. The bracts have a quarter to a third of the length of the seeds shed. If the seeds are ripe in October, the cones disintegrate on the tree, including the spindle and release the seeds. The white, egg-shaped seeds are 6-7 millimeters in size with 2.5 cm long, pale to brown-yellow wings.
The seedlings have four to seven cotyledons (cotyledons).
The golden larch is originally from the mountains in the eastern Chinese provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangxi, at altitudes between 500-1500 meters. It prefers deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soils and is kalkmeidend. In 1854 the gold larch to Europe and North America was introduced where they generally reached only about 20 meters height. Because of its autumn color is a popular ornamental tree.
