Iris

Lis (Iris) is a genus of lisse family (Iridaceae). Both the genus and species are popularly called iris. The genus includes not only many types of cultivars. Loops have long been used by man. The Egyptian pyramids are illustrations of loops can be found, which date from 1500 BC.

Botanical description

The flowers can range in color from gold, to white, blue, lavender and purple. Pink and apricot-colored irises are grown in some species.

The different types of loops are common in the northern temperate zone. All irises have long steal and six petal flowers, three of which point downwards, and three upright. In some smaller species, the petals are all out. Most wild iris grow from a rhizome, but some species grow from a bulb. The latter species are grown as a cultivated plant. Here are two groups:

* The Reticulatagroep (Iris reticulata and Iris danfordiae). This group includes early flowering, low growing species from eastern Turkey, western Persia, Caucasus and Lebanon.

* The Xiphiumgroep. Species of this group occur Spain, Portugal and North Africa. This group is important for floriculture. This group includes Holland's irises, which originated from crosses between wild iris species. In addition, separate English and Spanish irises, but they are of little interest to the ornamental.
